Before he retired from tournament fishing in 2002, Gene won just about every major tarpon tournament in Boca Grande in the last 10 years. On june 23, 1997 he broke the tournament record with a 200lb tarpon. His son holds the Jr. world record also taken with his father in Boca Grande.
